MCS Summer Research: Social Media and Exercise Posted on July 30th, 2019 by

Filip Belik and Dr. Louis Yu

This summer Filip Belik  and Dr. Louis Yu have been investigating the relationship between social media and exercise.  The content of the summer work can be separated into two distinct tasks. They are first utilizing the text classification capabilities of several machine learning algorithms to find the most effective way of classifying social media posts from Twitter as either pertaining to physical activity or not.  They then apply their classified data to the task of quantifying a person’s affection for exercise and determining if there is any social correlation of exercise habits within the confines of online social media.

This research opportunity was made possible through the First Year Research Experience Program.
