I taught computer science as a visiting assistant professor from 2010 until 2013. I am currently an assistant professor of computer science at St. Lawrence University, which is a liberal arts college like Gustavus Adolphus College, and I am one of the three computer scientists who teach a wide range of courses from introductory programming to advanced topics such as operating systems and networking. My research area is still in multimedia and networking, and recent papers include analyses of champion usage and bot prevalence in League of Legends.
How did the MCS department help you get where you are today?
My visiting assistant professorship at Gustavus Adolphus College was my first teaching position, and it prepared me to start a tenure track position. Colleagues in the department were always open to discuss my teaching and share their comments and suggestions. Having access to their previous course materials and opportunities to visit their classes gave me ideas on how to improve my own courses. Students in my classes were also not shy to share their thoughts on how the courses were going, and they helped me to shape my courses to help them in return.
What is your favorite memory or memories of the MCS department?
Delicious food, pleasant conversations, well-deserved student awards and magnificent view of the Linnaeus Arboretum all contribute to my fond memories of the department picnic at the end of each academic year. Also, it felt great to be outside enjoying the warm weather after months of severe winter! By the way, my Korean barbecue tradition lives on at St. Lawrence University, as we also have a similar event in the spring!
Is there anyone from your time at Gustavus that you would like us to blog about? Maybe a classmate or professor?
Everyone in the department! (especially the retirees!) And too many of my former students whom I can’t list them all here, but I did see the blog posts on Helen Wauck and Meghan Peterson!
Thanks for the update Choong-Soo. It’s good to hear from you.
