Gusties Place #1 of 53 in Regional Math Contest Posted on November 26th, 2007 by

A team of Gustavus students took 1st place out of the 53 teams competing in the mathematics contest sponsored by the North Central Section of the Mathematics Association of America.  Gustavus’s “Team Erick,” consisting of Erick Knight, Sarah Cowles, and Andy Scott, earned a higher score than any of the other 52 teams in the region: 85 out of a possible 100 points.  (Knight is studying at Gustavus as a Post Secondary Educational Options student while completing his high school education at St. Peter High School.  He is the son of Gustavus MCS profs Barbara Kaiser and Karl Knight.)  Contest organizer Jerry Heuer wrote that he “especially admired their solution to problem 10, which was intended to be, and turned out to be, somewhat of a killer problem.  I was worried that no one would solve it.  They, and they only, did so.”  Congratulations Sarah, Andy, and Erick!
