Gusties Take Gold for Statistics Project Posted on May 19th, 2007 by

As previously noted on this blog, Gustavus math majors Dan Johnson and Tyler Kramer were invited to the awards banquet at the US Conference on Teaching Statistics (USCOTS) along with their faculty advisor, Carolyn Dobler, in order to learn whether their project had won first, second, or third place in the Undergraduate Statistics Project Competition (USPROC). Now the suspense has ended; to paraphrase the rouser, the Gusties shone last night. Johnson and Kramer won first prize, receiving a $750 cash prize as well as an engraved plaque for the college and certificates for the individuals. Dobler reports that the students’ project on steroid use and home-run hitting attracted a lot of interest from conference attendees, causing her own excitement to bubble over: “It was quite an evening! I think I was more excited than they were. … I am so proud of them!!!”
