______________________________________________________________________

During the first half of the 20th century, William A. Granville was
widely known in the mathematical world as the author of a best-selling
calculus text. His connection with the text lasted only a short time
during his interesting and varied life, which included a brief sojourn
at Gutavus Adolphus College. I will present a biographical sketch,
which may raise more questions than it answers, and which will show
the important influence of the Lutheran church on the twists and turns
of his life.

Refreshments will be served.
