In recent years, social media services and its subscribers have multiplied at a phenomenal rate. This immense growth has been witnessed globally with millions of users creating and sharing content on an enormous scale. With this breeds an extremely complex and competitive online environment where different types of content compete for potential users. It is interesting to observe how certain types of content such as a viral video, a news article, or an illustrative picture, manage to attract more attention than others, and bubble to the top in terms of popularity.
This talk will study various trends found in a Chinese online social network (i.e. Sina Weibo), compare them to Western social media (i.e. Twitter), and analyze important factors that determine its popularity and influence. It will also examine how these trends are formed and what types of sources dominate the topics of discussion. We observed that there are vast differences between the content that is shared on Sina Weibo and that on Twitter.
Refreshments will be served.
