Attention students: We have an excellent opportunity to tour a company that employs many mathematics and computer science majors and talk with Gustavus alumni working there about their careers.

I would like to encourage you to participate in this trip, even if career issues are not only your immediate horizon. When we visited Federated before, students found it very valuable to hear some alumni perspectives, even if their own careers were likely to go down different paths.

Our bus will leave Olin Hall at 10:00am on March 6, and return by 3:45 that afternoon. Over lunch, we will hear about the actuarial and information services areas. Then we will split up to follow individual alumni from either actuarial or information systems to their work sites and talk with them in more depth.

In order to help our hosts plan logistics, please email Max Hailperin with your estimated probability of attendance. If you send me a non-zero probability, I’ll be back in touch with you as we get closer to the event. It would also help if you indicated which of the two areas you want to split off into.

I recognize that you may have classes meeting during this block of time on a Friday and that class attendance is important. I would ask you to weigh the value of this trip against the importance of those classes, and consider talking with your professors about ways you could minimize the damage done by going on the trip.

These events are for any interested students, not just those getting ready to graduate.

Math careers: November 15, 6:30pm

Secondary math education careers: November 16, 5:30pm

Computing careers: November 20, 6:30pm

MCS majors who graduated over the last handful of years will come back to talk about their job search processes, the jobs they landed, what it was like to start in a new job, and how it is working out. What is it like? What do they wish they’d known in advance? How can they help you?

Feel free to attend more than one of the evenings; for example, a computer science major interested in the NSA or a math major interested in software development might benefit from attending both the math evening and the computing evening.

For any questions, contact Max Hailperin. In particular, if you want automobile transport down and back up, please ask.

I thought I’d post the opening here for any ‘06 or earlier grads to check out. There is a lot of growth in the web and cdrom industry right now, with Flash Actionscript quickly replacing Lingo as one of the foremost languages used to develop interactive games, animations, interfaces, etc for release on the web or on CD/DVD. So, without further ado, here’s the post…

-Matt
——
CLIENT-SIDE MULTIMEDIA PROGRAMMER

We are currently looking for a multimedia coder who knows Flash for more than just a design/animation tool. Applicants must be fluent in client-side languages such as Flash Actionscript, Javascript, XHTML, CSS and XML. Qualified individuals must be capable of not only adapting existing code from our past projects but writing their own from scratch as needed. Projects range from digital courseware to video applets to multiplayer games and more.

Candidates must have a strong portfolio including web-based sites or applets, CDROM’s and other interactive work. Individuals must be highly self-motivated yet able to cooperate in a team environment. Qualified candidates should be capable of multitasking across multiple projects to meet deadlines and satisfy clients’ expectations.

Experience with Macromedia Flash Media Server, Macromedia Director, computer animation, digital/print design and/or video editing a plus.

The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM), a national research institute supported by The National Science Foundation, is pleased to announce its 2005 Summer Program, Research in Industrial Projects for Students (”RIPS”).

RIPS is a nine-week, intensive residential research experience for math, engineering, computer science and physical/life science undergraduate students that assigns teams of four students to a project designed by an industrial sponsor. Student participants are selected from an international applicant pool to provide the broadest possible intellectual and cultural experience to the students who participate in our program. Students share offices at IPAM. Industrial sponsors provide important direction to the students about their project. Students also visit the industrial site at least once during the summer. Besides the industrial sponsor, each student team is also assigned a UCLA Faculty Mentor to put students in contact with the latest mathematical techniques relevant to their project. Students have a mid-term and final presentation of their project results that is attended by the industrial sponsors, faculty mentors, and other students. Last year’s project sponsors were: Arete Associates, Inc., The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos National Laboratories, The National Center for Atmospheric Research, BioDiscovery and Pixar Animation Studios. Students who have a sufficient background for the program are usually rising juniors, seniors or are about to graduate. Further information about the program and application procedures is available at http://www.ipam.ucla.edu/programs/rips2005.
