The stated mission of Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics at Gustavus is “to provide an excellent education in the theoretical, practical, and aesthetic aspects of mathematics, statistics, and computer science to undergraduate students.” No doubt other departments of mathematical sciences also highlight both theory and practice in their mission statements, but there can’t be many that give equal billing to aesthetics. Sometimes math is beautiful even without being rendered into visual form, but visualizations often make the beauty apparent to a broader audience. In that spirit, CNN has provided some welcome attention to the mathematical art of Hamid Naderi Yeganeh. (Update: On 2015-09-30, he blogged more of his art on Huffington Post.)
